The XINSURANCE Clearwater Offshore Nationals is expecting a record-breaking registration as powerboat teams compete Sept. 25-27 in the waters off Clearwater Beach.
The competition is one of the season's biggest races leading up to the World Championship in Key West in November. Racing will take place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26 and 27, and admission is free.
The boats are specially built for offshore racing, can reach up to 50 feet long and reach speeds of up to 140 mph, according to the City of Clearwater.
Powerboat Nation reported that 90 teams are expected to compete in Clearwater, which would set a record for registration.
Thousands of spectators are expected to gather around Pier 60 to watch the races. The five-mile race course will run parallel to the shoreline, about 100 yards from the pier.
During the races, guests can enjoy food and drinks, while some beachfront hotels will host watch parties featuring DJs and dancing.
Parking is expected to fill quickly, and the city recommends attendees use public transportation options such as the Jolley Trolley, which will take spectators between Pier 60 and the entrance to Sand Key Park.
Teams are expected to arrive earlier in the week for registration, inspections and testing. Testing runs will take place Friday, Sept. 25, from noon to 3:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 26, will feature qualifying races for Class 1 and Class 2, Super Cat and Super Stock, followed by another five races Sunday, Sept. 27.
Races will run from late morning into the afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday, with the event concluding with an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday at Marina Cantina.
