When Javen Goldstein transferred to the University of Tampa mid-year, he arrived without a network, without anyone to text for a recommendation, and without a clear sense of where to start. Living off campus made everything harder. The casual question, 'where should we go tonight?' or 'what are the spots everyone knows about?', had nowhere to go. He wanted to get out and experience the city. He just couldn't find the right entry point.
The problem that became the product
That gap had real weight. Living off campus as a mid-year transfer meant Goldstein didn't have the built-in social infrastructure that might have made finding Tampa easier. He didn't have a person he could text to ask where to go or what spots everyone knew about. Over time, the isolation of not being able to get out and explore the city the way he wanted to contributed to struggles with his mental health.
The experience stayed with him, and it shaped the kind of platform he wanted to build. 'I wanted to be able to describe the experience I had in mind,' Goldstein has said, 'the atmosphere, occasion, neighborhood, or kind of night, the same way I would if I were asking a friend.' What he eventually built, alongside co-founder Justin Cleeman and brand and community lead Austin Maus, became Ambient Social, which launched in Tampa on August 28th.
Search the way you'd text a friend
Ambient's search is designed to match the way people naturally describe what they want. Instead of selecting filters for cuisine type and distance, a user can type something like 'fun dinner + drinks before going out', the search on the app's own Tampa screen, or 'quiet coffee shop where I can study', and find places that fit the moment they're planning for. The platform connects the kind of experience someone has in mind with the places that can deliver it.
Planning with a group is part of the design. Friends can share options, vote together, and land on a decision without the usual back-and-forth over text. A map makes it easy to browse what's around you or explore neighborhoods across the city, giving people a way to find something new in a part of Tampa they haven't spent much time in before.
Built for anyone who calls Tampa home
Ambient is built to serve Tampa regulars as much as anyone who's newer to the city. Users can rate the places they've visited and keep a personal record of where they've been, building a running log of their restaurant life that's easy to return to and add to over time. For people who already know the city well, it's a way to track what they've loved and stay curious about what's next.
To mark the launch, the team is running a $300 Tampa dinner giveaway, designed to give one winner a direct reason to get out and discover a local restaurant through the platform. It's a fitting start for what Ambient is designed to be: not just a tool for finding somewhere new, but a way to build your own relationship with a city. Ambient Social is on Instagram at @tampa_ambient.
