Velvet Coupe, a new champagne and wine lounge from operator Dina Branham, opened this week at 25 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South in St. Petersburg's EDGE District, joining one of the city's most active nightlife and dining corridors with a bubbles-forward concept and a late-night Wednesday-through-Saturday schedule.
Branham is not new to the format. She operated a wine bar in Delray Beach from 2018 to 2022 before relocating to St. Petersburg, and Velvet Coupe is her return to a category she's built a room around once before. Her framing for the new lounge — what she's described as "moody sexy chic" with the tagline "Luxury by Omission" — reads closer to a hospitality-industry positioning statement than a marketing line, signaling a curated rather than exhaustive program.
The lounge is built around a specific positioning: sustainable and organic wines as the through-line, with champagne and sparkling sitting at the center of the list rather than as an afterthought. Craft beer rounds out the bar program, but the configuration suggests Velvet Coupe is leaning into a category the EDGE District has not had a dedicated room for — a wine lounge anchored in by-the-bottle and by-the-glass formats rather than a cocktail bar with a wine list bolted on.
The food program runs parallel to the drinks, sized as small plates and built around build-your-own charcuterie boards as the signature format. Standalone bites include whipped feta, warm brie with baguette, and bacon-wrapped dates — three preparations that read intentionally for the venue type, where the food is designed to extend a glass of wine rather than anchor a full meal.
The room itself is sized for the concept. Velvet Coupe occupies the 1,450-square-foot space that previously housed Baked in the Burg, with seating for roughly 30 to 35 guests — including an eight-to-ten-seat bar — across a mix of low tables, stools, and lounge-style velvet seating. Mirrored wall treatments, a marble bar top, and warm pendant lighting set a tone closer to a hotel bar than a restaurant. That visual choice matches the operating hours: 6 PM to midnight, Wednesday through Saturday, a schedule that skips lunch and weekday-early crowds entirely and positions the venue squarely as an after-dinner and weekend-night destination.
The EDGE District has spent the past several years becoming one of St. Petersburg's most dense small-business corridors, layering restaurants, bars, breweries, and independent retail along Central Avenue and the surrounding cross-streets just west of downtown. Most of the recent additions have leaned into cocktail-forward programs or full-service dining concepts. A late-night wine lounge with a sustainability-forward list fills a specific gap in the corridor's mix — one that has been more visible in Tampa's Hyde Park and Seminole Heights than across the bay in St. Pete proper.
For St. Pete's wine community, the operator track record and the build-your-own charcuterie format are the two details most worth watching. Branham has signaled future plans including wine tastings, private members events, and live music nights — additions that would extend the lounge from a pure drinks room toward a programming-driven venue. Whether Velvet Coupe holds that positioning through its first summer will depend on the depth of the list behind the by-the-glass program, but the opening is one of the more deliberate wine-bar concepts the EDGE District has seen this year.
