The City of Tampa’s Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of activities and programs for families, including its Therapeutic Recreation Program for children and adults with special needs.
During a press conference Tuesday, families and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor shared how the program has helped their families, with some describing it as life-changing and encouraging other families to participate in the program.
Through the Special Populations and Inclusive Recreation (SPIRIT) program, families can access year-round activities for children and adults who may feel uncomfortable participating in other recreational programs because of social or behavioral challenges. The City of Tampa offers an annual Rec Card that costs $15 and allows access to activities and some facilities.
“Individuals can bring their kids here and they can get that firsthand one-on-one attention that again they need to be able to grow and to thrive to make friendships and be a wonderful part of our community,” Castor said. “We take great pride in our Parks and Recreation and we want to ensure that those services are available for everyone, so during the summer, holiday breaks, after school, Miss Casey and her team are here to provide those services.”
During the summer, the program costs $80 per week. The program is led by Casey Tolar, who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and recreational therapy.
