Red Mesa will close its Mercado West location at 6001 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg on Saturday, Aug. 16, capping a run of less than a year at an address that has now cycled through three restaurant tenants in roughly seven years. The operator told the Tampa Bay Times that the Cali-Mex concept never connected with the surrounding neighborhood, and that guests at the Central Avenue location were looking for a different experience than what Red Mesa has built at its Edge District original.
Mercado West had been a long-awaited project. Red Mesa brought the Cali-Mex format to 6001 Central in October, but the audience arriving at the address wasn't looking for what the concept delivers. The operator's account to the Times frames the failure as a clientele mismatch — the same format that works in the Edge District didn't find its footing on this stretch of Central Avenue.
The address itself has a documented pattern of short occupancies. Two Graces closed at 6001 Central in 2022, also less than a year after opening. Reading Room vacated the space in June 2019, with its chef citing unusually slow business. Mercado West is the third consecutive operator to open there and close before reaching a full year. Three tenants in sequence have come up short at the same block, which points to a site-level friction that no individual concept has been able to resolve.
The closure is the second for Red Mesa in two months. In June, the company ended a 16-year run of Red Mesa Cantina at its downtown St. Petersburg location. That building has already attracted a named successor: Rreal Tacos, the employee-owned Atlanta street taco brand, purchased the century-old space and is planning a flagship with a rooftop bar, targeting an early 2027 opening. No successor has been announced for 6001 Central Ave.
With Mercado West and Red Mesa Cantina both now closed, the Edge District original stands as Red Mesa's remaining St. Pete address. What fills 6001 Central next is unannounced. The final service at Mercado West is Saturday, Aug. 16.
