Azalea Gateway, a $200 million residential project on Raytheon's former 29-acre site off the Pinellas Trail in west St. Petersburg, is scheduled to break ground this September — more than three years after city approval in 2023.

The development calls for eleven four-story apartment buildings built out across three phases, delivering more than 1,000 total units. The site has sat vacant since Raytheon exited the property, and per the developer's announcement, the September start would end a dormancy that has left one of west St. Pete's larger infill parcels undeveloped.

At four stories and eleven buildings spread across 29 acres, the project reads as a campus-style residential neighborhood rather than a single consolidated mid-rise. Unit mix, leasing details, and amenity programming have not been confirmed beyond the announced building count and total unit figure.

The site fronts the Pinellas Trail, Pinellas County's primary north-south active-transportation corridor. That adjacency gives the development direct trail access — a locational attribute that sets the Raytheon parcel apart from west St. Pete infill sites interior to the trail network.

City approval came in 2023, and the developer's own characterization of the project as "finally moving forward" signals that the path from approval to construction took longer than anticipated. A three-phase build-out means the site will remain an active construction zone for several years past the September start; individual phase delivery timelines have not been confirmed.

At more than 1,000 apartments, Azalea Gateway represents a significant addition to west St. Pete's residential supply when complete. The September groundbreaking is the next confirmed milestone; phase-one delivery dates and leasing details will follow as construction gets underway on the long-vacant former Raytheon property.
