Slap Burger, a smashburger chain from the Northeast, has opened near the University of South Florida, according to the operator's Instagram — bringing a halal-certified burger menu to a Tampa corridor better known for national fast-food chains than regional concepts.
The menu centers on smashed beef patties available in single, double, and triple configurations. The halal certification distinguishes Slap Burger from most competitors currently operating in the Tampa market; halal-certified fast-casual has historically been anchored by Middle Eastern and South Asian operators rather than burger-focused chains entering from outside the region.
The full menu, per the Instagram announcement, includes Nashville hot chicken, mac and cheese, dragon-fruit lemonades, and banana pudding alongside the smashburgers. A specific street address and confirmed opening date were not included in the post.
The smashburger format — thin patties pressed flat on a griddle for a crispy edge — has been one of the more durable fast-casual trends of the past decade, with regional chains across the country pushing into new markets. Slap Burger's Tampa entry follows that pattern, pairing the format with halal certification as a point of differentiation that carries particular weight near a university campus with a large Muslim student population.
The USF corridor draws a dense student and young-professional population, making it a logical first foothold for a chain testing the Tampa Bay market. Whether additional local locations are planned has not been confirmed by the operator beyond the initial announcement.
